I liked the novely of the battery-operated portable
sets. The
Motorola Pixie was one I was fond of, with its submini tubes. My
first all-transistor radio was actually larger than the Pixie.
So do I. I have a portable radio about the size of a large-ish
transistorised set. But it's valved. And it covers MW (AM broadcast
band), LW _and_ Band 2 FM (FM broadcast band). I think it cheats by
having a couple of germanium diodes in the detector stage, but all the
amplifying stages are valves.
