In order to help you quickly : You can find the procedure to start the QT13-diagnostics on
page 2-13 of the QT13 manual (to be found on
bitsavers.org).
Even the switch settings can be read out via the diagnostics menu, so no need to open up
your system.

I have a 2444AC that I have successfully used with a QT13 to install
2.11BSD and RSTS/E on a PDP-11/73.
I'm pretty sure I ran the full on-board QT13 tape write/read
diagnostics on a scratch tape without any problems at some point.
I might have time this weekend to hook the system back up and capture
the QT13 configuration and diagnostic output from my system.
