The place
I've used (I got their name from Purdue's surplus
store), charges $1/lb to refine stuff, and a minimum charge of
500lbs.
Other places have a flat refining fee, then take a share of the
metal output.
Either way, it only pays off if large amounts are done at once.

What kind of profits can be had for 500lbs of boards?
It depends on what you have. :)
I got about $3.50/lb for my last load of stuff, which was a pretty
random mix of stuff (everything from PC motherboards to old UNIX systems
to boards out of random scientific equipment). Nothing particularly
rare, though. :)
