So, since you mentioned it, what DID you to do to do that? :P
I always hotplugged the SCSI cable, though I'm perfectly aware that's a
terrible idea (and was then, too).

Well, I asked.
It was better than not recovering their data, we did it hundreds of times,
without incident.
