Canon Cat experts?

Is there anyone who knows anything about Canon Cats? Specifically, how to repair them? Or, anyone who has a working one? I got an e-mail from a writer in SoCal who has been using one for twelve years to do all his writing. It was recently damaged in a brownout, and he's "having a bad time of it without the use of my CAT." Most importantly, he needs to get his data off the disks, but I gather he'd also like to continue using it.
