It's a habit from business dealings.
I use the word "mains" when I know there are friends in Blighty
reading the list because I know that most "murricans will know what I
mean. On the other hand, I prefer to use "ground" rather than
"earth" when speaking about a common return, knowing full well that
most of the list members from the UK will know exactly what I mean.
Really, the UK usage "mains" makes a bit more sense--we have water
mains, don't we?
But I don't think I'll *ever* undertand cricket scores... :)
