On the small amount of HPIB/GPIB stuff I have, I just
use ribbon cable
and 24 position IDC connectors. Works fine (you just can't stack them).
I suopect you coupld crimp a socket onto the cable as well (or one at
each end) so you could stck more cables onto it.
I've sene plenty of instruemnts where the internal conenciton from the
panel connecotr ot the PCB is made by IDC ribbon cable. I've seen a
coupleof devices (GPIB to RS232 intrrfces designed for the Pet) whee
there was a length of ribbon able coming out the back ending in a 24 pin
Microribbon plug. Yo just plugged int int othe back of astack of normal
cables on soem device or other in the system.
