Has anybody ever tried interfacing a modem to a

Sure
. . . but, the handsets don't fit acoustic couplers very well.
There were "road warrior" acoustic couplers that would fit a lot of
things, there are cables for some cellphones, etc.
The real way to go is to wire a 2.5mm plug onto the cord of a handset of a
POT. Using that as the headset for a cordless or cellphone gives you a
REAL handset to talk with, and provides a proper fit for the built-in
acoustic cups of most Bell 103 modems.
'course you COULD go direct connect, IFF your phone company has
started to comply with Carterphone V Western Electric.
