This is 1976 ... did they have 9600 modems back
then that a human

This would have been an acceptable speed on a hardwired terminal
line into,
for example, a DEC-20. Terminals aren't always connected to modems.
Indeed, far more terminals were (and still are) connected to
computers than to modems.
