That's an amazing story.
Good, dedicated teachers are really something special and can have a huge
impact on the life of their students...probably more impact than many of
them (i.e. the teachers) realise.
I too have a story about coming into contact with an exact machine from my
youth. We never had computers or calculators in school (Slide rules, yes).
I remember the very first computer I ever saw was in a TRS-80 Model 1 in
1979. I was undertaking post-grad studies. My wife-to-be was using in
psychology experiments in the university department she'd scored a
technician's job in. She wasn't running the experiments, but was involved
with the data entry. They were using specific psychology programs written
from the TRS-80.
Anyway, to cut a long story short, about three years ago I was gifted a
TRS-80 from a local guy. This person had also worked in Information
Technology Services (ITS) in the same University for many years. With the
machine came a number of cassette tapes containing custom programs for
psychology research. It seems this was the very same machine that had
piqued my interest in microcomputers all those years ago!
The first microcomputer I ever saw I now own.

P.S. This machine works but I have it as a spare. It's a little more beat
up than my pristine number 1 TRS-80 Model 1
