Both of the original PCjr infrared keyboards also had
connectors for the cable.
You mean that "phone cord"-ish thing on the edge?
Yes. The cord plugs into the keyboard as well as the 'K'
connector on the rear of the PCjr. Here's the description of the
cable as taken from the PCjr Tech Reference:
"The keyboard cord is a 1.8 meter (6 foot), two twisted-pair
cable, with a six-position RJ11 - type connector for the keyboard and
a six-position Berg-type connector for the system unit."
