Are y'all talking about th 8086, the 8088, or the
whole 8086 family?
On the 8086 and above, REP STOSW (properly aligned) is
twice as fast as
REP STOSB or non-aligned REP STOSW.
On the 8088, there is little difference in speed. The 8 bit data path
makes ANY STOSW behave like a misaligned one.
Of course you're right Fred, the point is, that on a
8088, it doesn't matter, while on a 8086 it gives an
additional boost.
