I really don't understand where the whole "only works with Apple drives"
myth came from.
Up through the early 90's Apple's drive setup tool only worked with firmware that
returned the right
drive sense ID.
There was a major change to the SCSI manager in the late 80's so not all early drivers
play nicely with
newer systems as well as the inverse.
There are also very early third party external drives that didn't use Common Command
Set controllers
like the early Adaptec and SMS/OMTIs.
Then, there is the issue of controllers/drivers that don't work right with VM. All of
this was sorted out
in the 90's, but don't assume earlier combinations will just work.
