Alright - shall we try a little experiment? Find out the correct resistor
to limit the current to precisely what you think a device of yours needs,
and connect mains voltage through it. If apparently the voltage doesn't
matter on things, why do we bother with large transformers, wall-warts etc
- in fact, why do we deal with different voltages at all, eh?
