These were specially designed (and Patented BTW) 2D bar codes that looked
something like a frame of 'snow' from a TV set that wasn't connected to
anything. The 2D nature allowed one to store I believe on the order of 1K
bytes in a strip that was about 1.5" wide by 8" long. The whole system was
in answer to the question of 'its a pain to re-type in these listings by
hand so I can try out the software.' it has since been replaced by the web.
