Time is money. Maybe you can find someone who'll collect, prep and ship
for love and no concern for time. If you can't, then how much return
on your time - even before any investment - would you like to receive?
I don't mind doing it for amateur love or for the concern for finding a
good new home for a unique item, but handling a garage full of junk is
a completely different story.

I buy the dirty unknown condition units mostly because you can get them very
cheap and I will take them apart to poke around and clean them anyway, and
you have a better chance of getting a complete unit when the seller hasn't
popped the cover to poke around. So I will put time into cleaning items for
my collection that would not be worth my time if it was not a hobby for me.
I made that comment you quoted above because most people want to see a
cleaned, complete, and working unit on ebay before they will bid it up. For
most rarities it is worth your time and trouble to clean them up and show
they work before selling them on ebay, for commodity items it is not worth
the effort.
Most garages full of junk probably have a few items worth cleaning up and
selling, a bunch of stuff worth selling as-is or partially parted, and a lot
of stuff that just needs recycled. If you are going to be a person who buys
bulk and resells then you need to know your stuff because every scrapper in
the universe will be listing items they know nothing about cheaply to
compete with you. You also need space to sit on items for a while to
maximize profit (dump a 100 Apple II+'s on ebay at once and you will get
very little per unit, do a few a month and they will sell better etc).
