That's true but you miss the point. The US is
still a major exporter
of oil, coal and other fuels. Please tell me why should we be exporting
it if we don't have enough to meet our own needs (if you buy the current
line from the GWB establishment).
The USA serves as a buffer to stabilize energy prices, and prevent the
casual use of oil supply as a political tool. Isreal and Japan get a LOT of
protection from this, and I suspect at least some quid pro quo exists.
