Just closing the loop on this, after checking with my drinking buddies
(aka, former Digi cohorts).
Turns out the devices were originally built by Central Data. Digi bought
Central Data and kept the line alive for a while. SGI had already
integrated them into IRIX and although they were called "SCSI Terminal
Server", they really presented a tty device interface to the OS and
application software. You ended up with a tty device per port in the
/dev hierarchy.
