Ok, thanks! That gave me enough of a clue to find them at McMaster-Carr.
They're called "Thread-Forming screws for plastics" (Page 3002).
I often use
brass heat-set inserts in the 3D parts I print and they work
very, very well.
My concern is that using inserts in old, more brittle thermoplastics might
not be very rewarding. But YMMV, as they say.
Oh certainly. I wouldn't recommend using them in vintage plastics unless
you've got a part designed for a heat-set insert that never had one
placed.
