X-rays aren't terribly hard to produce, it's producing them safely that's the
trick. You might try hunting down a used dental x-ray machine on eBay, the ones I remember
seeing have gone for ~$500. Another idea is using scotch tape in a vacuum to make the
x-rays.

I've often wondered if it's practical to build a tabletop x-ray machine for this
