(After 30 years I still think it was probably vaporware... Of course
there were non-SMD hard drives (SA4000 style) that were succesfully
interfaced to S-100 stuff.)
I seem to recall reading in _Once Upon a Time in Computerland_ that they
were trying to develop a hard drive interface with limited success.
