Plated through holes are pretty much a must today. The
original boards
didn't have plated though holes for the same reason the boards didn't have
a solder mask. I'd want to socket most chips, and soldering both the top
and bottom sides would make that very difficult (the idea of standing wrap
sockets up off the board to solder both sides just isn't terribly
appealing).
FWIW, I have never had any problesm soldering turned-pin (machined pin)
sockets on both sides of a non-PTH board. And those are the only type of
sockets I would consider using.
