Essentially, but done with cheap, available hardware and nothing to
solder that's more complicated than a power cable.

I don't know that you could get the same frequency range from
solenoids due to inertia (and perhaps the time it takes to create and
collapse such a large magnetic field). You certainly could take
random stepper motors and stepper drivers and reproduce the effect.
I suppose one could switch relays fast enough for some of the lower
notes, but I have to wonder how well relays would work at 500Hz and
above.
