I always hotplugged the SCSI cable,
though I'm perfectly aware that's
a terrible idea (and was then, too).

I've done it often enough on various systems. As far as I've been able
to tell, provided the bus is quiescent throughout the operation, and
the device starts out grounded to the same ground as the rest of the
system, there's no risk to anything. Am I missing something?
Of course, arranging for the bus to be quiescent can be mildly
difficult. On Suns I typically use L1-A to drop to ddb or the console,
Ctl-Alt-Esc on x86 to break to ddb, that sort of thing.
