I do realize that the interests of those who simply
want a simulation
capability and those who are interested in archiving do not necessarily
converge. Can we come up with a format that satisfies both groups?
I liked the work done by an MIT undergrad, Brian Zuzga, on the Time
Capsule File System (undergraduate thesis, June 1995), under the
guidance of Alan Bawden. Available on his web site and at MIT through
your favorite search engine.
I say "liked" because nothing seems to have come of it in the last 20
years... :-( Perhaps it can be revived...
