I don't know if this is the real cause of your problem or not (given that
you seem to have the same problem with WAVs and pre-recorded tapes), but
the 8.5% number is interesting. Two of the most common sample rates
supported by audio cards are 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz; they differ by about
8.8%. Is it possible that the MESS output is intended for a 44.1 kHz
sample rate but is actually being played out of your sound card at 48 k
samples/sec? That could explain why slowing it down by 8.5% would make it
OK again...
