Commodore floppy drives; faster than you can type

Yep, I paid $100 for mine, although granted I bought it in '94. Even today they'll still run in the $50-60 range. 1591 ROMs did allegedly exist, but my only contact for them, who actually built a working replica with the ROMs and an A4000 3.5" mech, managed to lose them and the prototype in the process. (Argh.) Some 1581s are capable of handling HD disks, though they treat them as DD. So far, though there has been some research on this point, there isn't a good way externally or even looking at the board to tell. The jury is still out on the longevity of such "DD-ized" HD floppies in a 1581 anyway.
