Right... The problem is that
those small-scale Linux "distributions" are
poorly maintained, at best.
This is not a Linux problem or in any form related to Linux. Companies
are pooly maintaining firmware for anything that is sold. New firmware
costs $$$ to develop, test, release and distribute. But the product is
soled and the new firmware will not produce any $$$. No $$$, no new
firmware.
Which is one of the reasons why the larger community /needs/ a general
purpose Linux distribution which is well maintained and tailored for small
footprint/embedded applications.
