Yes! Looks like the same tool either way (being made in Natick sounds
familiar so I think I had the Pericomp version) but those little ridges
are what I mean. Presumably that's so you don't need fingernails to get
the end of the tape off the reel when it's clingy.
Conversely, I also liked the little strips of Colorform material for holding
the loose end of the tape (or was that more on DECtapes? I remember little
blocks of foam on magtapes, and it's all a blur now). They seemed ridiculous
but they worked well.
