It seems to me that the OS for Prime minis (PRIMOS)
was implemented in
FORTRAN, at least initially.
possibly, but ISTR that when Prime tried to sell us some 750s their salesman said that
the OS was written in PL/1.
Incidentally the system we bought in that procurement (Honeywell level 66) may have
eventually gained a "C" compiler (I don't think it did, however), but our
preferred
system programming language was "B". We only ever wrote 3 tiny modules in
GMAP.
[the other shortlisted suppliers were DEC and GEC - the DEC salesmen just didn't try,
they effectively threw the price book at us whereas Prime and Honeywell threw the
price book away :) The GEC salesmen were by far the most technically knowledgeable
but they were only on the shortlist because we were forced to include a British company
and their systems were not really in the same league as the others. We did have to fight
hard to avoid being forced to buy them but we knew the score and put almost as much
effort into proving that they couldn't meet our requirements as we did in comparing
the
other three. ]
