I did some searching through the Whirlwind archives
at MIT, and believe
you're correct about the 6888. MIT worked with Sylvania to develop the
SR-1782A (6888), an improvement over the 7AK7 which was developed for the
Whirlwind system. The 6888 was used as a gate tube throughout the AN/FSQ-7.
Did you find any info about some of the other odd tubes used in the
machines? Specifically, I am thinking about the Z2177 (a GE
developmental number) and the strange number 0158 (yes, leading zero).
These are both unremarkable 9 pin minis, but it would be good to know
the background on them.
