According to the C128 service manual (I don't have the C128-D one), the
DE-9 connector (RGB output) is indeed the same as a CGA monitor connector
with a monochrome signal on pin 7 (not used on a CGA card/monitor). You
should be able to plug a CGA monitor in with no problems.
