Many people never realized that there was an expansion port card edge in
it, so that you could daisy chain additional devices (votrax, etc.)

YES.
At the time, there were a lot of magazine ads for an S100? based voice
recognition unit.
And, at Computer Faire #3 (LA), there was demo of a software intensive
voice recognition unit for Apple ][
