One of the more well-known scams is for a buyer to send you a money
order far in excess of the asking price "to cover shipping" asking
you to refund the excess.
This almost inevitably turned out to be an altered or forged money
order, which took weeks to uncover, leaving the seller hung out to
dry for both the item and the refunded money.
Money orders are designed as "bearer" instruments, which is why your
bank doesn't like them. A cashier's or certified check is far safer--
the check can be verified with a telephone call. Not so with a money
order.
