seriously trying to tell us that X11 - which was designed to run, and ran, on machines
older than some people subscribed to this list - is "bloated"?
I refer you to chapter 7 of the Unix-Hater's Handbook. While the writing style may jar
and they are prone to a certain amount of hyperbole, the criticisms seem reasonable
enough.
X11 is an utterly complex kitchen-sink and runs completely counter to the Unix philosophy
of doing one thing, and doing it well. It was the thing that finally tipped me over the
edge into buying a Mac and dumping my Linux desktop. The Linux box remains as a server,
but it doesn't have X11 installed.
