For REAL events to monitor, consider
the winter solstice in 2012
the Unix epoch (for those still alive almost 30 years from now)
The one I'd like to be alive for is the TENEX/TOPS-20/ITS epoch:

As for the next Winter Solstice, I've got 7 other festivals to watch for
before then. (2010 was cool, with full moons on the Autumnal Equinox and
the Winter Solstice, and a new on their quartering.)
