Hi
The HaL had a seperate micro processor that would
be connected to a terminal for diagnostics.
I used to work for them but didn't save any of the
documentation on the diagnotic processor ( I forget
which one it was as well ).
I still have one of the MCM processors ( most likely
blown up ). It is cool to look at.

I'm not sure if the "phone home"
was an SGI feature, or
something that they'd cooked up themselves. It seemed like a useful
feature for any kind of environment where uptime was crucial.
Computers with build in diagnosis?
HAL?
