Why do the English like warm beer?
Because they have Lucas refridgerators.
"Lucas, Prince of Darkness" wasn't his nickname for no good reason.

 Subject: Re: Lucas electrics
I once saw a sticker that poked fun in stating
that Lucas automotive
 headlight switches had three positions:
 Off
 Dim
 Flicker
Many a true word is spoken in jest :-)
Before car headlamps used the twin filament bulbs (main and dipped beams
-- the Lucas 'Double Dipper' for example), there were various schemes
tried to prevent dazzling oncoming motorists.
One of the early ones was a rheostat (variable resistor) in series with
the lamps. The 'Dim' position, I guess.
Another was called 'Dip and Switch'. This had a dipper switch like a
modern headlamp system. When you pressed it, the lamp nearest the centre
of the road was turned off, and the other lamp was slightly moved
(physically) by a solenoid. I guess that could be called 'flicker' :-)
