Don't Bernoulli drives physically deform (though very slightly) the
disk underneath the head? If so, that sounds like bad news for
worn-out oxide binders.
Yeah, maybe the ultimate answer is some sort of optical setup. Coat
or spray the disk with colloidal iron, then read it out using an
optical pickup of some sort. You wouldn't even have to spin the
disk.
