Certainly the best way to recover is to use som
sort of non-contact
reading. Maybe adapt an old Bernoulli mech?
Don't Bernoulli drives physically deform (though very slightly) the
disk underneath the head? If so, that sounds like bad news for
worn-out oxide binders.
