Oh, they may be the best of a bad lot; I'm familiar with only a very
few others, and the ones I'm familiar enough with to compare the
software view of are all integrated into something larger, such as the
7750 SCIF or the MicroVAX-II console.
The absence of anything better - even if that's what it is - doesn't
make them good, except possibly in a relative sense.

Well...not trying to be contrary here, but as someone who uses
async
serial pretty much all day, every day, I can't even remember the last
time I needed or used hardware flow control.
And I can't recall the last time I wanted two stop bits or hardware
parity checking. That doesn't mean it wouldn't be a defect if a chip
couldn't do them.
