At one point, I seem to recall that there was a proposal put forward
for Plug'n'Pray cards that each would contain a small ROM with some
Forth code--the idea being that the card wouldn't be tied to a
particular CPU.
It never went anywhere, AFAIK.
(found in Suns,
Macs, etc).
The format is Fcode; it's actually a brilliant idea that of course was
of more pressing importance when the hardware market was actually
heterogeneous.
