Yup, the 28, 35, and 38 (I think I recall it existing) are all built
like tanks. While 28's are relatively abundant 35's seem to be rare
(and the 38's -- which am *sure* existed -- might as well have never
existed).
Though, the 15 while built well, isn't as reliable. It also can't go
past 75 wpm speed (and even then it requires a lot more maintenance
than usual). It's mostly because the design of the 15 is more
typewriter-esque; e.g. instead of a moving type box with a hammer to
hit the right pallet of type, it has individual type bars, like on a
typewriter.
Our timesharing system model 33s tended to fail a lot
because they were pushed beyond their design service limits.
I've heard of that. I've also heard of some heavily used 33s lasting
forever. But then again it all depends on the environment, and
maintenance.
Aside: I would love to get my hands on a model 35 teletype. KSR
preferred, mostly since an ASR, while beautiful, is too damn big (at
present).
Cheers,
Christian
