At least with tape, air flow is critical. You have to push a lot of air into the reel to
get at the inner wraps.
I've never tried baking floppies in the oven I built because of the air flow (9
5" muffin fans in the bottom between
the heating element and the tape) so if this works out I may get one just for dealing with
floppies.
You might also look for a Shugart 850 in good shape instead of the Tandon. I don't
really like Tandons very much.
Important thing to consider is easy access to the heads. Qume drives are difficult to get
to the heads. I've also
had better luck with a single sided drive as far as head damage to media if what you need
to read is only single-sided.
