| There is a piece of plastic, like thick tape, attached to the takeup spool which hooks
into the leader, how should this be positioned in the drive so that it can load the tape
correctly when I have put it back together again?

I know it is not good form to reply to one's own post but I have worked out how to
thread this so that it picks up the leader. The drive now appears to be working again.
