Maybe we crossed mails, but it sounds like you already did.
The $150 range is fair.. For one thing, it's very much a niche product, and
not the sort of thing that is easy to knock out on the bench, using
junk-box parts. Too much grief generating the AC ring voltages, DC talk
battery, call progress, CPC, etc.
Not a simple one to DIY.
Interestingly, it also has an audio monitor port, where you can listen to
the progress of the transmission. But when it's switched-in, it cuts the
bandwidth back quite a bit due to the parasitic effects of the audio
hardware. They have a DIP switch that lets you hard-select On/Off for the
audio port. IIRC, it's good for 128K with the audio switched out.

THank you for the offer. Another set of cups showed up on eBay this
afternoon, and I grabbed it.
And I swear that I'm not a pimp for Viking
Electronics, but they make a
device called a DLE-300 which is essentially a micro-sized Telco Central
Office (with two lines) that sits on your desk.
That sounds like an interesting and useful product. I'll look into it, and
maybe get one if it's not too expensive.
