Well, I differentiate between "friends" and "acquaintances".
An acquaintance is someone you've met and occasionally chat with.
A friend is someone who will bail you out of jail in the middle of
the night, take you in when you're stranded, or attend your funeral.
Very different animals in my opinion. Simply calling someone a
friend doesn't make him/her one.
