I've finally gotten the drive 0 reverse motor on
my TU-56 tape drive
working. It required the replacement of two transistors on the Motor Drive
Control Board. The problem I now have is that the motor only runs at high
(18V) speed, even when it should be running at low (9V) speed. Any hints as
to where to look next?
As an aside, I think fixing the things is more fun than running them.

As a software person, I can't help with the tape drive.
But your comment about fixing the hardware is interesting.
I find that my personal experience with software is about
the same - I enjoy fixing the bugs plus enhancing the
software I use (I am an RT-11 addict) more than just
using the programs. Although I must admit that I have
found that some of the enhancements I have made to
the Single Line Editor (SL:) as well as to the Binary
Compare utility (BINCOM) have been extremely helpful
when I use them to help with other work.
