It was a rather awkward design. I own a few with and without plastics and
they are
painful to carry, easy to break; I've even had the chassis half
slide out of one in transit, which was embarrassing and scary. I'm betting
a lot of them were either broken, or owners got too annoyed with the
plastic and chassis coming apart that they decided to dispense with it.
i think they could be rack mounted that way? but you're right, the edges
are sharp, and even when you're working inside them, they're a little
cramped and it's not too hard to cut yourself. i much prefer the ba123, aka
the "space heater" which gives you more room to work, and imo looks a lot
nicer.
