and it's not due to writing to

under Unix the code pages are marked read-only so of course it core dumped.
I wonder if this is true in Winders. Seriously -- is it?
It may be (a function of the Intel processor), but you can get around this
my mapping those pages elsewhere with read/write access (well, in ring 0).
