And what's wrong about begging museums?!?
I've gotten the impression that it is frowned uppon.
At the very least, one musuem I talked to doesn't want to give away
things willy-nilly because it might scare away donators of objects. I
suppose many donators give to museums because they know the object ends
up in good hands, not to someone who will turn around and sell it for
profit.
If only that were true. Museums in the UK and I am sure else where are
under great pressure for space. They have regular revues of collections
policies and will dispose of items that are duplicates or no longer
relevant. So for example I see from
http://www.bartg.org.uk/forsalewanted.asp :-
/*Teleprinter equipment from the Royal Corps of Signals Museum, Blandford*//
//The Royal Corps of Signals Museum, Blandford, has the following item// for
disposal://*
Reperforator No1 Mk2*// [quantity 2 items]//
This item is free to a good home on a 'first come, first served' basis - but the
new owner must collect
from the Museum within 28 days of their request being
accepted. Although this item is free, the Museum
would welcome a donation of
whatever the collector wishes to give.

If you have a different experience, i'd like to
hear about it.
what happened to all the stuff from the Boston Museum.? I think when
museums close all bets are off!
